I took my GF of six years to meet my extended family for the first time. My family is very religious – they are Seventh Day Adventists. In the SDA world they are fairly liberal, however, put them into mainstream society and they are VERY conservative. It was a good trip though – nothing too horrid happened. One of my cousins didn’t bring his two daughters, because he didn’t want to have to explain “the gays” to them, but that was really a shame for him, not me. The issue that I had was the gender separation! The men sat around and talked until one of the women needed a “manly” task. I actually got dirty looks for saying something about not needing a to take the garbage out and offering to do it. I also had my uncles telling me to “take it easy” as I was carrying stacks of chairs on a to the room that we had all of our meals in. And I made one of my cousins mad by getting her husband to help make sandwiches – he was standing around and I told him that if he wanted to stand in the kitchen he better make himself useful. It had been years since I had seen most of my family, and in that time I have found that gender equality is very important to me. When I look back on my childhood, I do remember it being the same but I didn’t think of my family as being “unequal”. Instead I saw the women in my family being strong and “in charge” and the men being quiet and deferring to their wives. I admired my aunts because they had it all together. I saw my family as largely matriarchal, and have kept that idea close to my heart. I still admire the women in my family and them all but I have also come to realize that they aren’t matriarchal the way that I thought; they all bow completely to their husband’s wishes– even if they strongly disagree with their husbands…And the husbands do not defer to their wives – they are mostly lazy and useless… I am trying to figure out how I feel about all of this… and trying to understand how I didn’t it before. My views of my family have changed drastiy and I am having a hard time with it.
